These are some of our favorite outdoor activities when we can escape everyday life and get backing touch with nature.

Cattail Marsh Nature Area

Cattail March abuts the 500-acre Tyrrell Park in Beaumont. The marsh was created in 1993 for wastewater filtration by the Beaumont city government. It has been very closely watched by environmentalists and wildlife professionals due to its environmentally friendly solution to the problem. It comprises 900-acres of levees, mudflats, and ponds and is home to a diverse range of animal and birdlife.

The area has become a haven for more than 250 species of birds and wildfowl, including pelicans, egrets, and ducks. Over 200 alligators call the western section of this marsh their home. The boardwalk system in the marsh has two covered areas that can also be used for birdwatching, and a variety of seating scattered throughout the area. There are also eight miles of gravel road around the marsh where you can go biking, horseriding, or jogging.

Neches River Adventures

For an exciting day on the water, get tickets on the Ivory Bill, a covered 45-foot excursion boat that travels the Neches River. The boat is available for charter or you can join one of the public tours. The public tour takes you through 10 miles of the bayou, and then down to the Port of Beaumont. The captain and guide are extremely knowledgeable about the Neches River, and they can tell you many fascinating stories about its history.

The public tour takes approximately 2 hours. if you book a charter, you’ll be able to hire the boat with the captain and two crew for two hours, but this time can be extended. It’s a very popular option for corporate functions and special events. There are no concessions on the boat, but you are welcome to bring food and drink. There is also a restroom on the boat. Gulf Terrace Hike & Bike Trail

If you enjoy bike riding, this trail is a must. It starts from Phelan Boulevard and then follows a 3.5-mile square loop. The route is mostly long and straight, with small detours at the turns of the loop. Sections of the trail take you between fields of wildflowers. For non-bicycle riders, the trail can also be used for walking, hiking, or jogging.
